Mountain News & Happenings

May 2010

Updated: Tar balls from Gulf Coast oil spill will not reach Misty  River Campground on the Little River.

Tar balls suspected to be part of the Deepwater Horizon oil leak have been sighted along the beaches confirmed the Department of Environmental Management.

Scott Hughes, spokesman for ADEM, said the water generally is safe, but advises people to stay away from the tar balls. Jimmy Felton said the best way to avoid the tar balls is to stay out of the saltwater and head north to Misty River Cabins & RV Resort on the Littler River that flows from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Little River is some of the cleanest water in the nation!

   Did You Know?

At 480 feet, Fontana Dam, located on the southwestern boundary of the park, is the tallest concrete dam east of the Rocky Mountains. The dam impounds the Little Tennessee River forming Fontana Lake and produces hydroelectric power.

See you under the Stars,
